ZED ZONE farming guide

Before 1.0, food came only from scavenging, hunting and fishing, and seeds could only be dropped. Version 1.0 added a real farming system built around Planting Pots.

  • Farming arrived with 1.0: Planting Pots, not open soil.
  • 12 crops including corn, potatoes, tomatoes, wheat, mushrooms.
  • Outdoor pots are watered by rain; mushrooms like underground.

How to farm in ZED ZONE 1.0

  1. Build a Planting Pot. Crops grow in pots you build, not in open ground. Official
  2. Sow seeds in the pot. Official
  3. Water and fertilize while the crop grows. Pots outdoors are watered automatically when it rains. Official
  4. Harvest once the crop is ripe. Official

If you are on an old save and seed items only offer “Drop”, that matches pre-1.0 versions, when farming was still “in development” on the roadmap. Version note Update to 1.0 and build a Planting Pot.

The 12 ZED ZONE crops

The 1.0 notes give the count, 12, and name six: corn, potatoes, tomatoes, wheat, mushrooms and blueberries. Official The other six were not named in the announcement; we will list them once they are confirmed from the game.

MushroomsGrow well underground, so a basement can be a farm. Official
Corn, potatoes, tomatoes, wheat, blueberriesNamed in the 1.0 notes. Growth times and yields were not published.

What to cook with the harvest

The 1.0 notes name Bread, French Fries, Tomato Sauce and Chicken and Mushroom Soup among the dishes harvested crops make. Official Cooking needs a cooking station; see crafting stations. An electric or portable induction stove works too (power).

Where to put a farm

  • Outdoors for rain watering, inside your walls so hordes do not trample the route to it.
  • Underground for mushrooms. Official
  • In co-op, farming is one of the jobs the developer pictures sharing out: one player scavenges while another tends the fields. Official See co-op.
  • In Cataclysm Mode, where you cannot leave the island, farming is part of preparing for horde nights. Official

Finding seeds

Seeds turn up as loot: a launch-day player picked up blueberry seeds in a house within the first hour. 1.0 video Grass seeds also exist and could be planted before 1.0; a Beta 0.9.97 fix stopped half of planted grass vanishing after a reload. Official Reviewers note farming matters most because it frees your expeditions: with food growing at home, a trip can be about weapons or parts instead of meals. 1.0 review
