ZED ZONE beginner guide: your first days
You start next to a crashed helicopter on a quarantined island with almost nothing. The first in-game days decide whether you find your footing or die to a horde you woke up yourself.
- New Standard worlds start with a tutorial (since Beta 0.9.99.9.7).
- Noise wakes Dormant Hordes; sneak and use melee early.
- Make a bigger backpack and a water source before you roam far.
What to do in your first hour
Follow the tutorial if your world has one. New Standard Mode worlds have shipped with a beginner’s guide since Beta 0.9.99.9.7, and the area around the spawn point was laid out for it. Official Older worlds, Horde Mode and Cataclysm Mode do not start with it.
- Pick a starting weapon you can feed. Since Beta 0.9.99.8.15 the bodies by the helicopter no longer carry a revolver or an air rifle, and the starting weapon comes with less ammo. Official A melee weapon or bow saves ammo you will not find quickly.
- Loot the crash site and the nearest houses quietly. Random loot was cut by about a third in the same patch, and guns by half. Official Search everything; corpse outlines turn green (not searched), yellow (items left) or red (looted).
- Do not fire near hospitals until you have looked around. Dormant Hordes, groups of zombies lying on the ground, appear near hospitals and in the wild. Noise or an attack wakes them. Official
- Sort water before food. Thirst now drains health instead of killing you without warning (March 2026 patch), but it still drains it. Official
ZED ZONE first-day priorities, in order
| Priority | Why | How |
|---|---|---|
| A bigger bag | The starting Cloth Bag holds little. | Players craft a fabric backpack early: about four times the space, from fabric, rope and sewing kits. Players report |
| Clean water | Contaminated water makes you sick. | Build the cooking pot over a campfire (it is a building recipe; add fuel, then light it), or use a filter bottle or an electric kettle. Players report |
| A safe room | Saves, storage and crafting need a place. | Take over a sturdy building first; see base building. |
| A workbench | Most early recipes need one. | See crafting stations for what each bench makes. |
| Bandages | Bleeding limbs slow you and drain health. | Bandaging plays an animation; injured limbs heal faster while you sleep or when bandaged. Official |
What kills new players
- A horde you woke. Gunfire and car alarms pull zombies. Alarms summon more enemies the longer your run has lasted. Official A woken Dormant Horde is marked on the PDA map until it is cleared.
- Raiders. Human raiders use every weapon the player can and flank in squads. Official See raiders and hostile NPCs.
- Fire. Players report that rolling (Space by default) puts out flames on your character, sometimes after more than one roll. Unverified
- Cold. Snow can arrive early. Warm clothing, a fire or an electric heater keeps body heat up; the Cold Resistance skill slows the loss. Official
Does ZED ZONE have a goal or an ending?
Yes. Since 1.0 the Standard Mode has a route to an ending: repair the boat, sail to the Far Island, defeat three Area Guardians and the final boss in Area 61, then escape. You can keep playing the save afterwards, and finishing Standard Mode unlocks Cataclysm Mode. Official The full route is on Far Island and ending.
Where to go next
- Plan your character: skills and attributes.
- Find a dog early: pets never die and help in fights.
- Look up anything you pick up: all 543 item IDs.
ZED ZONE world settings for a first run
A new Standard world asks for a lot of choices. The names below are the settings shown in 1.0 gameplay videos 1.0 video, plus the ones named in patch notes Official.
| Setting | What it changes | First-run suggestion |
|---|---|---|
| Difficulty | How hard enemies hit (the hardest preset has enemies deal full damage) | Default |
| Infected amount, zombie respawn rate | How crowded the map is and how fast cleared areas refill | Default or lower |
| Infected speed | Walking pace of the infected; a faster preset is much deadlier | Normal |
| Zombies Run at Night | +30% speed for zombies and hordes from 20:00 to 06:00 Official | Off (the default) |
| Starting season | Winter starts are harder: cold and snow from day one | Spring |
| Loot Abundance, Gun Reserves | How much random loot and how many guns spawn; Gun Reserves can be “Shotgun-Only” or a total ban Official | Normal; video makers who found it too easy chose “Shotgun-Only” |
| Map size, town and vegetation density | Bigger maps mean longer walks; dense grass clutters the ground | Medium |
| Destructible Buildings | Off protects the outer walls of map buildings Official | On |
| Online Wanderers | Other players’ characters appearing as survivors Official | Your choice |
| Explore Mode | Changes what the map shows before you explore it | Off if you want points of interest marked |
Your first crafting: research the workbench
Skill tree nodes that unlock buildings ask for real items, not just points. In an October 2026 run, researching the Workbench needed a stone axe and a stone hammer in your inventory, and both tools were handed back after the unlock; the stone furnace node took 10 rocks. video, Oct 2026 A practical first chain:
- Collect plant fibre from grass and twist it into rope.
- Make a stone axe and a stone hammer, then research and build the workbench.
- Pick up rocks as you walk; unlock and build the stone furnace outside your shelter, then feed it fuel.
- Chop trees for wood. There are two kinds of “stick”: the crafting material from trees and bushes, and the wooden stick weapon; arrows need the material. Players report
Crafting fast-forwards game time while it runs, so watch the clock before starting long jobs at dusk. video
What you start with, and what to take from the crash
You pick a starting weapon; the bodies at the crash site carry supplies such as bandages and the Red, Green and Blue Doses that feed the skill tree. 1.0 video Some players find the start too generous and drop their kit to make a harder run. Unverified Others find the tutorial pop-ups intrusive; they only appear in new Standard worlds. Players report
Do not touch cars on day one. Both 2026 videos we checked set off an alarm by searching a car, and the alarm pulled every nearby zombie. Players report
